WA: Burundi man feared drowned in Cottesloe swim

PERTH, Feb 24 AAP - A 22-year-old African man is feared drowned after disappearingfrom rough surf at a popular Perth beach over the weekend.

Water police and surf lifesavers were today searching the whole metropolitan coastlinefor the man, from the small central African nation of Burundi, after he vanished at Cottesloeon Saturday.

His disappearance came the same day that more than a quarter of 2,000 entrants in theannual Cottesloe to Rottnest swim were forced by organisers from the water, or voluntarilyretired from the race, because of turbulent conditions.
