NSW: NRMA supports union call for WorkCover crash investigations
The NRMA is supporting a union call for the New South Wales work safety watchdog to
investigate fatal truck crashes.
Currently all road crashes are handled by the police, but the Transport Workers' Union
wants WorkCover to investigate the cause of deaths and serious injuries in heavy vehicle
accidents.
The union says businesses which place unreasonable pressures on truck drivers must
be held accountable for their part in road fatalities.
The NRMA says recent fatalities on NSW roads highlight the continuing safety problems
affecting truck drivers.
A spokeswoman for NSW Industrial Relations Minister JOHN DELLA BOSCA says the minister
has already announced initiatives to address fatigue in the trucking industry.
These include guidelines for government agencies like WorkCover and police to cooperate
to ensure the proper investigation of truck accidents.
