Boston, MA--Nortel Networks (NYSE: NT) has strengthened its leadership position in the high-performance Optical Internet market, capturing 48.1% of the overall global market for optical transport equipment in the fourth quarter of 2000, according to the latest figures from the Dell'Oro Group, a market research firm. Dell'Oro ranked Nortel Networks No. 1 "across the board" for the fourth quarter in DWDM-Long Haul (60.4%), DWDM-Metro (54.8%) and SONET/SDH (41.1%) as well as overall. This included a 7.6% increase in DWDM-Long Haul and a 4.9% increase overall from the third quarter of 2000. For the year, Nortel Networks captured a 42.9% share of the overall global optical transport market, an increase of nearly 13% over 1999.
